CABO SAN LUCAS IS SAFER THAN EVER BEFORE FOR VACATIONING
Are you aching for a patch of white-sand paradise South of the border? If you’ve been keeping up with the travel headlines, you may feel like a vacation to Mexico comes at too great a risk. Rest assured, however; Cabo San Lucas has never been safer for couples on their honeymoon, families on vacation, and solo expeditions.
In an article published by The New York Times, the Los Cabos Tourism Board claims that the tourism hotspot received more than $40 million from both government and private sources to improve city-wide security.
According to the managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board, Rodrigo Esponda, “Everybody is cohesively working toward improving the situation and it’s having a good result.”
THE IMPACT
With a great improvement in city-wide security, Cabo San Lucas has seen significant changes as a result. According to Travel Pulse, the Cabo San Lucas crime rate has dropped 90%!
In addition to a plummeting crime rate, the city’s safety procedures have also earned a significant rise in travel-oriented revenue. The tourism industry in Los Cabos is booming (growing twice as fast as that of Mexico’s) with new hotels, resorts, and luxury villas offering a first-class experience in a safe city.
In an interview with Travel Pulse, Rodrigo Esponda stated that the hotel openings are directly related to the increased security, expressing that investors feel confident in the level of security that the city has achieved.
THE SECURITY
How did Cabo San Lucas achieve such a gleaming reputation during a time like this? Rodrigo Esponda -- the managing director of the Los Cabos Tourism Board -- gives credit to a five-point action plan involving 200 additional well-trained police personnel, the Mexican Navy, the Marines, and a state-of-the-art surveillance system comprised of over 200 cameras citywide. This powerful strategy incorporates municipal, state, and federal levels of authority, all working toward one common goal: make Cabo San Lucas a safe place for visitors.
This is not to say, however, that you should travel carelessly. While Cabo San Lucas has become a haven for tourists, there are other areas in Mexico that are still on the list of travel warnings issued by the U.S. Department of State. Travel smart and exercise caution when traveling to any foreign country.
The U.S. Department of State provides a few safety tips on their website, many of which go without saying. Don’t go driving down deserted back roads at night, be aware of your surroundings when you use an ATM, etc. Travel smart and stick to the city to enjoy a safe vacation in Cabo.
